Just in Time for Fall: Space Blankets

Space Station

Have you noticed a chill in the air recently? We have too. We believe community acupuncture works best when you are at your most comfortable, so we are excited to offer a nice, light and shiny space blanket as part of your treatment at no additional cost to you.   Limit one per patient, so be sure to bring yours the next time you come. Don't worry, we still stock the paper drapes in case you forget yours.

They are a bit noisy, but it's a fair tradeoff for how nice and toasty they keep you. If you close your eyes, the gentle wrinkles of mylar, sound like a gentle rain storm.

Space blanket were designed by the NASA  space program to protect astronauts from the dark cold of space. They can reflect 90% of your body heat, are water and weather proof. Plus they are reusable (you can clean them with soapy water, but don't use ammonia based cleaners). I used one for myself at our intern clinic at AIMC Berkeley, and it held up pretty well for 100+ treatments. In fact, I still have it.

Here are some for fun facts from "How Stuff Works"

  • Invaluable to marathon runners to help stay warm at the end of a race.
  • Hospitals find them useful to keep patients warm during surgery, as anesthesia tends to make people shiver.
  • Campers, climbers and mountaineers -- anyone who may find themselves stranded in cold weather -- discover space blankets are an extremely lightweight and cheap addition to their first-aid kits.
  • In 2005, after an earthquake devastated parts of Pakistan, charitable organizations delivered space blankets to the victims. People used them as both ground cover and warming blankets.
