POCA Power: Acupuncture to the People, Southside Community Acupuncture in Richmond, VA

We are excited to announce that SCA has officially joined the People's Organization for Community Acupuncture (POCA)!  

POCA is a cooperative of people and organizations involved in the community acupuncture movement. Memberships exists for acupuncturists, patients, clinics, and supportive organizations. As a multi-stakeholder co-op, it is designed to build a long-term, stable economic relationship based on fair treatment. POCA recognizes the interdependent nature of acupuncturists, patients and the surrounding community, and that a healthy relationship between the three can contribute positively to the overall health of local economy and community.

POCA's Vision

  • To make community acupuncture as widely available as possible.
  • To establish affordable acupuncture training and continuing education programs.
  • To establish best practices for the operation of sustainable community acupuncture clinics.
  • To create job stability for community acupuncture employees, staff, and clinic owners.
  • To build healthy relationships and foster collaboration among our practitioners, staff, patients, and communities.
  • To establish micro-lending programs, scholarship funds, insurance/benefits programs, and further financial support to POCA members.
  • To ease entry into the practice of acupuncture and work with legislators to ensure safety and reasonable regulation.
  • To develop research that is useful to POCA clinics, patients, and practitioners.
  • To build alliances with organizations that build community and foster sustainable economies.
  • To sustain POCA as a robust, flourishing cooperative.

Community Acupuncture is healthcare by, of, and for the people. YOU can join the movement to bring affordable, safe, and effective healthcare to everyone.

Annual dues are sliding scale from $25 to 100/year.

  • Free birthday treatment each year.
  • Three “free first treatment" certificates for your friends and family. – good at any POCA clinic. Introduce friends and family to community acupuncture.
  • Sticking Together – our e-newsletter.
  • Waiving new patient fees at POCA member clinics.
  • Access to online discussion forums to connect with punks and other patients .
  • Volunteer opportunities in local clinics and in our movement.
    • Many clinics compensate their volunteers with free treatments
  • Voting in annual board elections and running for positions in our cooperative.

Joining POCA also puts your membership fees to work immediately to:

  • Develop a micro-loan program to open and support more clinics.
  • Create affordable educational alternatives to train community acupuncturists (aka punks).
  • Support punks in successfully opening, managing, and improving their clinics.
  • Promote legislative change to encourage and support community acupuncture.
  • Provide a working model for sustainable, ethical, affordable community healthcare practices.
  • Increase access to affordable acupuncture for all.
